Archery Programs

While the Saskatoon Straight Shooters Archery Club's goal is to promote and develop the sport of archery to all, our focus has been on youth archery through the Junior Olympic Program (JOP).

Saskatoon Straight Shooters Archery Club also provides basic and intermediate coaching to its members in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Archery Association (SAA).

Junior Olympic Program

The JOP is offered through the Saskatchewan Archery Association and is open to youth aged 8-21 years. The program provides young archers with instruction in archery, the opportunity to develop skills, progress through badge levels, and participate in tournaments where they compete against other archers at their level. Several of our archers have gone on to compete at provincial, national, and world-wide events.

Youth archers shoot an indoor round of 30 arrows (3 arrows each for 10 ends) on a 40 cm face target following Archery Canada Indoor Target Rules. Archers begin shooting from a 10-metre distance from the target and work to earn badges. Badges can be earned by shooting at least two scores at a regular JOP event, or a single score at any registered tournament or competition. There are five badges to earn at 10-meter distance, four badges at 15-meter distance, and twenty-two 18-meter badges.

Frequently asked questions about the JOP:

What days and times do you have lessons?

Our season runs from October to mid-April. October is spent getting the archers comfortable with their equipment, the range, and shooting arrows. We don't start scoring until November 1, when the season officially begins. The season concludes at the JOP Provincial Championship in April.

Ten-meter archers shoot Sundays from 10:00-11:30 am, and 15/18-meter archers shoot from 11:30 - 1:00 pm. There is a short, weekly parent meeting at 11:30 am every Sunday. This is when we hand out badges, share the new skills the kids are working on, and make important announcements. We appreciate your attendance at these meetings!

How much does it cost?

Our program fee is $350 for the season. Our club also accepts grants from KidSport for payment of fees. If you would like to apply for an individual grant for your child, visit: KidSport Website

Fees include coaching, badges, scorecards, the entrance fee to our club-hosted tournament, and the Saskatoon Wildlife Federation membership fee.

All JOP members MUST also have a membership with the Saskatchewan Archery Association ($30). This a separate registration process that is completed online.

Do I need to buy my child equipment?

Your child must have a hip/belt quiver (not a back quiver) and arrows. The club has bows for youth to use for the first few months. Your child MUST have their own bow (compound or recurve) by the time we resume the season in January, after the December break. We highly encourage you to get your child their own bow as soon as possible. Once your child is shooting with equipment that is specifically set up for them, their scores will improve and so will their confidence!
